قال المدير العام للمنظمة، تيدروس أدهانوم غيبريسوس، في مؤتمر صحفي عبر الاتصال المرئي من مقر المنظمة في مدينة (جنيف) السويسرية، إنه “من غير الأخلاقي نشر فيروس ونحن لا نعرف عنه أية معلومات وليست لدينا المعرفة الكافية حوله أو الاستجابة المناعية له”. وأشار إلى أن مسؤولي الصحة يهدفون عادة إلى تحقيق مناعة القطيع عندما يتم حماية جميع السكان من الفيروس عن طريق التطعيم وبالتالي يكون غالبيتهم يحملون مناعة، مبرزا أنه للحصول على مناعة القطيع من الحصبة، على سبيل المثال يجب تطعيم حوالي 95 بالمئة من السكان.
وأكد غيبريسوس على عدم وجود سياسة “مناعة القطيع” للتعامل مع أي فيروس أو أثناء جائحة أو وباء، ذلك لأن المسؤولية في تلك الحالات هي حماية الناس وليس تعريضهم للإصابات.
كما لفت غيبريسوس إلى أهمية إنقاذ الأرواح والعمل على وقف انتشار الفيروس من خلال إجراءات “معروفة أثبتت نجاحها” مثل تعميم الاختبارات التشخيصية وعزل المصابين واقتفاء آثار من تواصلوا معهم وحماية الفئات الضعيفة صحيا وزيادة وعي السكان.
